Tuition

I am able to offer one-to-one tuition on violin, piano, keyboard, guitar, ukulele, and recorder, and although a high standard of tuition is offered, it is of paramount importance to me that music is fun.  The atmosphere is friendly and informal and all pupils are given the opportunity to play in concerts.  Pupils are encouraged to take music examinations although those who wish to play ‘just for fun' are also welcome.

Violin

Violins start in small sizes so young children are able to learn to play the violin.  Reading music is gradually introduced as the child establishes reading and writing skills together with aural sophistication.

I am an accredited Violinbabies teacher (www.violinbabies.com). Violinbabies provides the opportunity for young children to:

  • learn to play the violin
  • overcome the sight reading barrier
  • acquire the very best techniques right from the start
  • really enjoy themselves in the process

Violinbabies children learn to play the violin in a happy, relaxed atmosphere.  They compose their own melodies, and advance toward reading conventional music notation in a natural progression, but at a much earlier age than is normal - some even before they can read!

Piano/Keyboards

One of the most popular instruments, but in many ways the hardest to learn because it involves so much at once.  There is a large amount of music for all styles in piano and keyboard.  A 5-6 year old who is grasping reading and writing skills will be greatly assisted by learning music/piano.

Guitar

This is great for budding rock stars!  Though learning is hard and enjoyable and there is a distinction in classical, jazz/blues, Spanish and rock guitar.  I suggest starting with the basic acoustic guitar and allowing interest to develop.

Recorder

Many younger children begin on the recorder.  It is good for little fingers to play and they can make a reasonable sound quite quickly, learn to read music and enjoy playing favourite tunes.

Ukulele

The ukulele is a great little instrument that has become very popular recently.  It is an instrument that is versatile and adaptable.  It is inexpensive and relatively easy to learn and suitable for all kinds of music.  It is an instrument that even small hands can cope with.

Junior Keyclub

This is a group session for young children.  Mozart Mouse and Beethoven Bear are always on hand to show the children what to do.  The course provides a balance between the discipline necessary to play the piano and the enjoyment one receives from the process of music making.

The course is written to provide appropriate piano instruction from the age of four.  Singing and listening skills are developed simultaneously with an appreciation for a variety of musical styles.

An excellent, fun way to introduce your child to instrumental skills before the formality of individual lessons.

Kids' Drumming

This is a group course that teaches rhythms and songs on a variety of drums and sound sources, including many objects that can be found at home.  A good foundation and understanding of certain basic rhythms, counting, drum rudiments, musical terms, form and notation, improvisation, co-ordination and ensemble playing are taught.  The course is aimed at children aged 7 to 9 years.

Drumming is a massive area, demanding commitment and skill.  Drum fanatics must be prepared to start lessons from scratch in order to play them properly.  Percussion is great for all styles of music.
